SUSTAINABLE CLIMATE ACTION
What are Carbon Offsets?
Carbon offsets are a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. Each offset represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide (or its equivalent) that has been either removed from or not released into the atmosphere. In the Great Bear Rainforest, these offsets are created by preserving trees that naturally store carbon by absorbing greenhouse gasses. By purchasing these offsets, organizations or individuals can compensate for their emissions. Offsets from GBC help protect forests and support Indigenous-led projects prioritizing environmental stewardship and community wellbeing.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES & CONSERVATION
Our
Approach
GBC's approach to carbon offsets is grounded in Indigenous stewardship and ecosystem-based management (EBM). Revenue from carbon offset sales is strategically allocated to support stewardship efforts, economic development, and governance within the Coastal First Nations.
By choosing GBC, you're investing in long-term sustainability and Reconciliation. A significant portion of the funds are dedicated to stewardship and conservation initiatives. This includes establishing and maintaining stewardship offices across seven communities, which play a crucial role in monitoring forest health and carbon storage. Additionally, the project supports the Coastal Guardian Watchmen programs, empowering Indigenous stewards to safeguard the ecological integrity of their traditional territories.
